The BCome Circular Economy Indicators (CEI) are a set of metrics designed to measure how well a product aligns with the principles of a circular economy. Our framework is based on the robust and globally recognized methodology developed by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.
It consists of one main indicator—the Material Circularity Indicator (MCI)—and several key sub-indicators that provide detailed insights into your product’s performance.
The main indicator: Material Circularity Indicator (MCI)
The MCI is the overall score that summarizes your product’s circular performance.
- What it is: A score from 0% to 100% that provides a holistic measure of how well a product’s material flows have been designed to be restorative and regenerative. A score of 100% represents a fully circular product, while a score of 0% represents a fully linear one.
- Its purpose: The MCI is designed to help brands and designers measure the circularity of their products, identify areas for improvement, and communicate their performance in a clear and credible way.
Key sub-indicators
The MCI score is calculated using several data points. The following sub-indicators provide a more detailed look at the specific aspects of your product’s circularity.
- Recycled Content (%) This metric quantifies the percentage of a product’s material that comes from recycled sources (both pre- and post-consumer). A higher percentage indicates a greater reliance on circular material flows and contributes positively to the MCI score.
- Total Unrecoverable Waste (kg) This indicator measures the total mass (in kg) of a product’s material that is not designed to be cycled back into the economy and is expected to end up as waste, for example, in a landfill.
- Utility (% Improvement) This metric measures the improvement in how intensively a product is used (for example, its durability or lifespan) compared to an industry-average product of the same type. A higher percentage of improvement indicates a longer and more effective use phase, which is a key principle of the circular economy.
By combining the main MCI score with these detailed sub-indicators, BCome provides a comprehensive and actionable assessment of your product’s circularity based on a world-leading methodology.
