The reliability of the Eco-Score is ensured through a multi-layered approach that combines strict validation rules, brand accountability, and a continuous expert review process.
1. Strict validation criteria
Our system is built on the principle of verification. A score is only awarded for a “good practice” if it can be validated against a set of established criteria. The primary and most objective method for this is the declaration of a recognized, third-party certificate. Any practice that cannot be validated is not considered in the final Eco-Score, ensuring that all scores are based on substantiated claims.
2. Brand accountability
We understand that not all sustainable practices come with a formal certificate. For these cases, the system relies on brand accountability.
When you declare a non-certified good practice, you assume full responsibility for the claim’s accuracy. By making this declaration, your brand agrees to be subject to a potential audit or spot check from the BCome team if we deem it necessary. This creates a system of shared responsibility for maintaining the integrity of the score.
3. Continuous expert review
The entire Eco-Score framework, including the list of accepted certificates, validation resources, and scoring logic, undergoes a rigorous quarterly review.
This process is managed by our in-house sustainability expert—a materials engineer specializing in Life Cycle Assessment—to ensure the methodology remains up-to-date, scientifically sound, and aligned with the latest industry best practices.
